Welcome to Toad for Data Analysis

Toad for Data Analysis is a multi-platform database tool designed for IT and Businesses that need to investigate and analyze their data. It empowers effective decision making by providing insight into business data, allows users to access and understand their data from any source, and streamlines the process of data collection ensuring the right information is delivered on time.

Toad for Data Analysis provides a full featured ER Diagrammer, Database Browser, Query Builder, and Editor for the following databases:

Oracle
SQL Server
DB2 (LUW and z/OS)
MySQL

Most companies have additional databases that they need to connect to and query. To help achieve this, Toad provides basic connectivity, querying, and reporting functionality using the Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and ODBC providers. The inclusion of these additional providers should address the reporting requirements for most companies.

The purpose of the ODBC provider is to offer basic connection and querying capabilities to any database that supports an ODBC 3.0 or later driver. For a list of databases tested with the ODBC provider, see the System Requirements. This form of connectivity allows connections to databases such as Sybase, Teradata, IBM iSeries, and Ingres. Because this form of connectivity is generic, it is not full-featured and may not be as robust as the fully exploited providers for the other databases.

Key Features in This Release

Toad for Data Analysis provides tools that help you succeed in your query and reporting goals. Many of these tools are considered Best Practices and are beneficial for individual users as well as managers. Key features can be grouped into the following categories.

Define

One Tool to Query All Databases
Connect to any database type for basic query needs. Using one tool for all platforms makes it easier to learn and train others. Create common connections, reports, and files that can be shared by all users. This ensures consistency throughout your organization.
Customized Look and Feel
Customize the look and feel of Toad for Data Analysis to fit your workflow or to match existing applications like Toad for Oracle, SQL Navigator, or native database tools using the Configuration wizard.
Organize Related Information for Easy Access
Add ER Diagrams, queries, and reports to the Project Manager to provide significant time savings. The Project Manager also provides the following time-saving features:
- Create multiple projects to manage and track related tasks for each customer request.
- Double-click files in the project to quickly load them for review or execution. You can also add favorite web sites and directories.
- Use the To-Do list to track items you need to complete and set reminders.

Understand

Visualize Database Relationships
Database schemas can be difficult for new users to understand. The ER Diagram displays the database relationships between tables to reduce the learning curve. It also provides the following useful features:
- Hide columns that are rarely used so users can focus on critical information.
- Add manual relationships to commonly used joins in queries.
- Save, share, or use ER Diagrams as a template for building queries.

View Master Detail Relationships
Analyze data in parent tables and drill-down to data in related child tables with the Master Detail Browser.
Browse and Edit Database Tables and Objects
Quickly locate objects of interest by setting a filter in the Object Palette. Once located, use the Database Browser to view details such as indexes and constraints, and to edit data.
Add Notes to Objects
Create notes in the ER Diagrammer, Master Detail Browser, Object Palette, or Query Builder to help users learn more about specific tables and columns. Any notes added from one feature are available in the other features that support notes.

Query

Build Complex Queries
Build complex queries and subqueries visually with the Query Builder. The Query Builder includes the following beneficial features:
- Add Lookup tables to a column for easy filtering.
- Use bind variables to optimize a query.
- Annotate tables, relationships, or the actual diagram with notes.
- Save or share the query for future use.
Utilize a Full-Featured SQL Editor
Create, test, and execute scripts from the SQL Editor. The following features increase productivity and ensure consistency in your organization:
- Look up an object while typing using Code Completion.
- Insert snippets of code included with Toad or create your own.
- Format code to company standards.
Compare and Synchronize Data
Compare data between Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL databases. If differences between two values exists, use the Viewer to display the values side-by-side. After comparing the data, you can synchronize it.

Report

Export Data in One Click
Export data to a file, an Excel instance, a pivot table, or a linked query with a single click. Linked query reports are ideal for distribution to users who need to see changes to data without waiting for scheduled updates or for new reports to be distributed.
Export Data From a Wizard
Use the Export Wizard when you need more control over the output format, column delimiters, or want to generate INSERT statements.

Automate

Automate and Schedule Tasks
Automate and schedule frequent tasks by dragging-and-dropping them into a visual script designer. You can schedule long running queries to execute during off-hours and can automatically export the results to Excel. You can also add these tasks to the Project Manager, and then double-click them to execute them. Automation offers an extension to your work day without you having to be there.
Publish Files and Reports
Publish and share files and reports via email, network share, or web site with your business community.

Known Issues

The following is a list of issues known to exist at the time of Toad for Data Analysis release.

Data Compare	Oracle	Attempting to synchronize data that contains a LONG RAW data type results in a "System.OutOfMemoryException" error. Workaround: Alter the table that contains the LONG RAW data type and replace it with a LOB data type.	CR#223458

Data Reports	All	Currently, you cannot crate a Label Report in the Toad Data Report wizard.	CR#215945
Database Browser/ Object Palette	All	Attempting to edit duplicate data on a large table may result in Toad hanging. This issue was identified on a table that contained 67 columns and 216,000 rows.	CR#214782
Editor	ODBC	Creating a table in the Editor, and then selecting View \| Refresh All may cause Toad to hang.	CR#215341
Editor	All	If you have a transaction in the Editor that has not been committed, and then attempt to insert data in the Database Browser for the same table used in the Editor's transaction, Toad hangs.	CR#221778
Export Wizard/ One Click Export	All	Binary data types cannot be exported in this release.	CR#170430
Export Wizard/ One Click Export	Oracle	Exporting data using Fixed Column Width as the output format results in a System.OutOfMemory error.	CR#221833
Import Wizard	All	Currently, you cannot import Excel 2007 files because they are saved using an xlsx format. Workaround: Save the Excel 2007 file as a 2003 compatible file before importing it.	CR#221667
Master Detail Browser	Oracle	If you create a manual relationship between a parent and child column that have a different data type, a "Parent columns and Child Columns don't have type-matching columns" error occurs.	CR#222769
Object Search	Oracle	When searching the source code of procedures, Toad may hang for some Oracle schemas.	CR#222542
Query Builder	DB2 Oracle	In the Result Sets tab, if you right-click the data grid and select Row Count the following error displays: "Tried reusing closed connection." Workaround: Send the generated DB2 or Oracle query to the Editor, execute it, and then right-click the data grid and select Row Count.	CR#223701

Database Browser/ Obj Palette	All	A Microsoft .NET Framework issue causes an exception error when you attempt to browse the Data tab for a table containing a decimal value with a precision greater than 28 or 29. Editor	Oracle	If a statement contains a semicolon before the end of the statement, attempting to execute a block of code in that statement results in an "ORA-06550...PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol 'end-of-file' when expecting one of the following..." error. Workaround: Either execute the entire script (F5) or select the entire statement and execute it (F9).	CR#213350
Excel	All	If an Excel file is open in Toad, you cannot open the same file in a separate Excel instance. To review this and other limitations when using Excel in the Web Browser, see "Considerations When Using the WebBrowser Control" at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304662.	CR#222833
Export Wizard/ One Click Export	All	In order to export to an Office 2003 or 2007 Excel instance, the Office Primary Interop Assemblies (PIAs) must be installed. 	All	Exporting data to a linked query results in an "Old format or invalid type library" error. This is a known issue when running an English version of Excel on a computer with non-English language regional settings. Workaround: Install the Multilingual User Interface Pack for Microsoft Office. 	All	Exporting large datasets to Excel (approximately 650,000 rows) is not recommended because of the amount of time it may take. This issue occurs because the Excel export component maintains the output in memory until the export completes. This can cause performance issues depending on the available system resources. Import Wizard	All	Importing large datasets from Excel (approximately 650,000 rows) is not recommended because of the amount of time it may take. Import Wizard	Oracle	In some instances, Toad may hang and shut down when attempting to import an Excel file into an Oracle table from the Object Palette.	CR#222565
Query Builder	Oracle	When using the Oracle Direct Connection method (Direct tab in the Create New Connection window) adding a table to the Query Builder and executing a query generates a "System.Exception: NET: Unknown error 1". This is a known issue with the OraDirect provider. Workaround: Connect to Oracle using the Oracle Client tab in the Create New Connection window before executing a query in the Query Builder. Client Requirements

Before installing Toad for Data Analysis, ensure your client system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements:

Memory	512 MB of RAM minimum, 768 MB recommended Note: The memory required may vary based on the following: Applications that are running on your system when using Toad Size and complexity of the database Amount of database activity Number of concurrent users accessing the database
Hard Disk Space	345 MB of disk space to run Toad.
Operating System	Windows^® 2000 Note: The Automation feature requires the .NET Framework 3.0, which is not supported on Windows 2000. Windows 2003 Windows XP Professional (32-bit or x64)
Additional Software	.NET Framework Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or 3.0 Notes: Consider the following: In order to run Toad, the .NET security policy must be set to unrestricted. For more information, see User Privilege Requirements. In order to use the Automation feature, the .NET Framework 3.0 must be installed. The .NET Framework 3.5 is currently not supported. Web Browser Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later PDF Viewer Adobe^® Acrobat^® Reader 5.0 or later (for viewing the Getting Started Guide) Microsoft SQL-DMO 8.0 (SQL Server native provider only) This component is included if client connectivity is installed. Existing DB2 client support (DB2 native provider only) Toad installs a DB2 9 client as part of the installation process. The DB2 9 client can co-exist with an existing DB2 8 client; however, it is incompatible with a DB2 7 client. User Privilege Requirements

The following user privileges are required for installing and running Toad for Data Analysis:

Only Power users and Administrators can install Toad.
If a Power user installs Toad, a Restricted user can run the application but cannot
- Associate file extensions.
- See the Toad shortcut icon on the desktop or the Toad menu option in the Windows Start menu. As a workaround, Restricted users can create a shortcut to the application and place it on their desktop from the install directory.
If an Administrator installs Toad, the Administrator can share the Toad shortcut icon on the desktop and the Toad menu option in the Windows Start menu with any user on the computer.
A Power User or Restricted User must belong to the DB2ADMNS or DB2USERS group. To add the user to one of these groups, select Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | System Tools | Local Users and Groups | Groups | DB2ADMNS or DB2USERS.
In order to use Toad with DB2 for z/OS, any user who does not have SYSADM privileges must be granted SELECT permissions on the DB2 catalog tables.
In order to run Toad, the .NET security policy must be set to Unrestricted. To modify the security policy:

From the Windows Start menu, select Settings | Control Panel.

Double-click Administrative Tools.

Double-click Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration.

Click + to expand My Computer, and then select the Runtime Security Policy node. A list of tasks for the node display in the right panel.

Click Evaluate Assembly from the list of tasks in the right panel. An Evaluate an Assembly window displays.

Browse to the location of Toad.exe in the File field.

Click Next to view permissions for Toad.exe.

Set the permission to Unrestricted.

In order to set or modify Toad Security settings, users must have privileges to create the QuestSoftware.ToadSecurity table if it does not exist. If the table does exist, users must have privileges to insert, update, and delete the QuestSoftware.ToadSecurity table.
Power users and Restricted users do not have the authority to add or remove DB2 catalog entries using the Toad Client Configuration wizard. However, these users can use the Import Profile function to import catalog entries to Toad.

Citrix Requirements

Toad has been tested for Citrix support on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Server Service Pack 2 using the Metaframe Access Suite 3.0 and Citrix Presentation Server Clients 10.0. For information about installing Toad in a Citrix environment, see Install Toad on Citrix Systems in the Toad for Data Analysis Getting Started Guide.

Silent Install Requirements

Before you perform a silent installation, the following software must be installed on every system on which you are installing Toad:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later
(SQL Server native provider only) Microsoft SQL-DMO
(DB2 native provider only) Toad installs a DB2 9 client as part of the installation process. The DB2 9 client can co-exist with an existing DB2 8 client; however, it is incompatible with a DB2 7 client. If a DB2 7 client is already installed on the system where you are installing Toad, you must upgrade to the DB2 8 client before installing Toad to avoid losing functionality in some DB2 native tools.
